To start, a heat protector which will shield your hair against high temperatures is a must. But there temperature setting of your hair straightener is just as important.
By using a heat protector it doesn’t necessarily mean you should be turning the temperature up on your hair straightener.
Is there an ideal temperature to set your straightening iron to achieve straight hair?
The answer is Yes … and No. The right temperature will be the lowest temperature setting that allows you to achieve straight strands with a single pass of your hair iron.
Certain hair types are easier to straighten than others. Thick, curly hair tends to require a higher heat setting and a bit more work in order to achieve straight hair.
If you have fine or nearly straight hair you can typically get away with much lower temperatures. Fine hair textures should stay in the 175-190°C degree range, but for more coarse or thick hair, 200–230°C degrees is appropriate.
If your hair is damaged, it’s best to keep your straightener’s temperature as low as possible and avoid straightening your hair as much as you can. Already damaged hair can become even more damaged when high temperatures are used on it. The same goes for colour treated hair, excessive heat can also cause the colour to fade.
ghd straighteners do not have a temperature control. Scientists at the ghd R&D facility in Cambridge UK have concluded that the optimum temperature for straightening and styling hair without causing any damage is 185°C. ghd Stylers have therefore been developed and manufactured with an ON/OFF button only. When turned on the ghd Styler will heat up to 185°C is a few seconds.
